Big Time Gaming is the Australian studio that gave the world Megaways™. Before Megaways, most slots paid on a fixed set of lines. BTG’s engine changes the number of symbols on each reel with every spin. As a result, a classic six-reel Megaways game can offer up to 117,649 ways to win.

That one idea reshaped online slots. BTG licensed the engine to rival studios, and Megaways slots are now a game category of their own. Many casino lobbies even have a separate section for them.

Company History

Nik Robinson founded Big Time Gaming in Sydney in 2011. He was no newcomer to the industry. According to BTG, he set up New Tech Media back in 1996. That business later went to News Corp and became part of OpenBet.

Robinson built BTG with technical lead Huw McIntosh and creative lead Ian Schmidt. From the start, the team focused on maths-heavy, high-volatility slots. It stayed small, but it aimed high.

The Breakthrough: Dragon Born and Bonanza

BTG first used Megaways in Dragon Born in early 2016. The game proved the idea worked, but it didn’t make much noise. Then, in December 2016, the studio released Bonanza.

This mining slot paired Megaways with cascading wins and a free spins multiplier with no upper limit. Players loved it straight away. In fact, BTG calls the Bonanza launch the moment that made its name. Nearly ten years on, it’s still a lobby regular.

Opening Megaways to Other Studios

Next, BTG started licensing Megaways to other developers. Studios pay to use the engine and the Megaways name in their own games. By early 2021, Evolution said the mechanic featured in over 200 games from multiple providers. Many more have followed since.

Well-known licensees include Blueprint Gaming, Red Tiger, Pragmatic Play, iSoftBet and Relax Gaming. Each one builds its own maths and features on top of the BTG engine.

Joining Evolution

In April 2021, Evolution agreed to buy BTG. The deal closed later that year after regulators gave their approval. Evolution paid €220 million up front, split between cash and new shares.

On top of that, Evolution agreed earn-out payments of up to €230 million. These depended on BTG’s earnings in 2022/23 and 2023/24. That put the maximum price at €450 million. At the time, BTG reported 2020 revenue of €33 million and EBITDA of €29 million. Those numbers show how profitable a small studio with a hit mechanic can be.

Other BTG Mechanics

Megaways is the headline act, but BTG keeps inventing. Here are the other mechanics you’ll see in its games.

Feature Drop and Bonus Buy

BTG was one of the first studios to let players buy their way into a bonus round. Older games call this Feature Drop, while newer ones call it Bonus Buy. BTG’s own games list shows 41 titles with Bonus Buy. Prices vary from game to game. For example, White Rabbit 2 charges 35x your stake for Hold and Spin, or 100x for 12 free spins.

UK players won’t see this option, though. In early 2020, the UK Gambling Commission told licensed operators that feature buy-ins didn’t meet its technical standards. So UK-licensed casinos switch the feature off.

Megaclusters™

Megaclusters takes the Megaways idea and applies it to cluster pays. Winning symbols can break into smaller blocks, so the grid keeps changing shape. Star Clusters and Cyberslot are good examples. Star Clusters 2 followed in September 2025.

Megapays™

Megapays is BTG’s progressive jackpot system, with four jackpot levels. A small part of each bet feeds the jackpots, and you can win them in a special Megapays feature. Any bet can trigger it, but higher stakes improve your chances. You’ll find it in games such as Bonanza Megapays and Danger High Voltage Megapays.

Megapots™

Megapots is newer and works a little differently. In White Rabbit 2, three jackpots called Mini, Midi and Mega sit above the reels. Their prizes change on every spin, and you can only win them in the Hold and Spin feature. BTG lists six Megapots games so far, including Monopoly Megapots and Fruit Merge Megapots.

Megadozer™ and Megaquads™

Megadozer adds a coin-pusher style feature to the reels. It first appeared in Bonanza Falls, which launched on Light & Wonder’s OpenGaming platform. Later, it turned up again in Max Megaways 3. Megaquads, meanwhile, splits the screen into four separate slots that you play at once, as in Slot Vegas Megaquads.

TapCards™

TapCards is BTG’s take on instant-win games. You tap cards to reveal symbols, match them for prizes and chase a Tappot jackpot. Bonanza, Extra Chilli and Millionaire TapCards arrived in 2025. After that, Monopoly TapCards followed in 2026.

The BTG Game Catalogue

BTG’s own website lists 91 games as of September 2026. That’s small next to studios with hundreds of titles. Still, almost every release tries something new, whether it’s a mechanic, a feature or a licensed theme.

Licensed themes are a big part of the mix. BTG has a long partnership with Sony Pictures Television, which explains its Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and Survivor slots. It also licenses classic songs for games such as Lil Devil and Danger High Voltage. More recently, it has added a run of Monopoly titles.

What RTP Can You Expect?

Most BTG slots publish an RTP of around 96%. A few go higher. For example, White Rabbit Megaways returns 97.24% in normal play. If you use Feature Drop, that rises to 97.77%.

Some BTG games, like White Rabbit and Bonanza, show a slightly higher RTP when you buy the bonus. Also, like many studios’ games, BTG titles can exist in more than one RTP version. That means a casino may run a lower setting than the figure you see quoted online.

Licensing and Regulation

BTG’s licensing has changed since this page was first written, so here’s a clear update.

BTG used to hold a remote software licence from the UK Gambling Commission under account 38696. However, the Commission’s public register shows that BTG surrendered this licence on 23 March 2023. The register records no regulatory action against BTG itself.

BTG slots are still offered at UK-licensed casinos today. The register doesn’t say which company now supplies them. For reference, Evolution’s UK-licensed company is Evolution Malta Holding Limited.

Older versions of this page also listed licences in Alderney, Gibraltar and Malta. We couldn’t confirm any current BTG licence in those places from official sources, so we’ve taken them out.

Evolution’s 2026 UK Settlement

In July 2026, Evolution agreed a £4.75 million settlement with the UK Gambling Commission. The regulator had found five genuine Evolution games on six websites run by two unlicensed operators. These sites were reaching British players.

The Commission said Evolution’s money-laundering risk checks weren’t strong enough to spot the problem. It also said it had considered suspending Evolution’s licence. Evolution cooperated, blocked the games on those sites and tightened its controls. The Commission didn’t name the games involved, and the case doesn’t change how BTG slots work at licensed casinos.

Are BTG Games Fair?

BTG games use random number generators to decide every result. In regulated markets, games must also pass independent testing before they go live. So, if you play at a properly licensed casino, you can expect a fair game.

The Megaways Licensing Programme

Megaways is a trademark, and BTG decides who can use it. Licensed studios pay to build their own Megaways games. BTG also licenses its other mechanics, including Megaclusters and Megapays. In fact, its website says Megapays is open to all Relax Gaming partners.
