Jackpot Slots with the Highest RTP

Jackpot slots offer something regular slots can’t: the chance of a life-changing prize from a single spin. Top studios like Microgaming, NetEnt, Playtech and Betsoft all make them. Some jackpots reach millions, and new winners make the news every year.

There’s a catch, though, and it’s worth knowing before you play. Jackpot slots often have a lower RTP than standard games. That’s because part of every bet goes into the jackpot pool instead of the regular paytable.

This guide explains how RTP works on jackpot slots and which types of jackpots exist. It also lists the jackpot games we’ve reviewed with the best returns. You’ll also find tips for choosing a jackpot slot that suits you.

What Is RTP?

RTP stands for return to player. It shows the share of all bets a slot pays back over a very long time. For example, a slot with a 96% RTP pays back about 96 of every 100 units bet. That’s an average across millions of spins.

RTP is a long-term figure. It doesn’t tell you what will happen in one session. You can win much more or lose much more than the RTP suggests on any given day.

Our guide to RTP and online slots explains the idea in more detail.

How RTP Works on Jackpot Slots

On a jackpot slot, the total RTP is split into parts. One part comes from the normal paytable and features. Another part goes into the jackpot.

For example, a slot might list a total RTP of 96%. Of that, around 1% might fund the jackpot, and the rest comes from normal wins. Some studios publish this split in the help screen, so it’s worth checking.

The jackpot share only pays out when someone wins the jackpot. That’s why most players experience a lower return than the headline RTP suggests. The jackpot is rare, but it’s very large when it finally lands.

Topboss Group tip: Always open the help screen before you play a jackpot slot. It usually shows the total RTP and, in many games, how much of it comes from the jackpot.

Types of Jackpot Slots

Jackpot slots come in a few main types. Each one works a little differently.

  • Fixed jackpots: the top prize is a set amount, often a multiple of your bet. It doesn’t grow.
  • Standalone progressives: the jackpot grows with bets on one game at one casino.
  • Local progressives: the jackpot is shared across a casino or group of casinos.
  • Wide-area progressives: the jackpot is shared across many casinos. These produce the biggest prizes.
  • Must-drop jackpots: the jackpot must be won by a set time or before it reaches a set amount.

Wide-area progressives usually have the lowest base RTP, because more of each bet goes to the jackpot. Fixed jackpots often have higher RTPs, since the prize doesn’t keep growing.

Popular Jackpot Networks

Several big jackpot networks are linked to many different slots. Here are some we cover on Topboss Group:

  • Mega Moolah: Microgaming’s famous four-tier progressive, known for record-breaking wins.
  • WowPot: another Microgaming progressive network with huge top prizes.
  • Age of the Gods: Playtech’s Greek mythology series with four linked progressives.
  • Kingdoms Rise: Playtech’s fantasy series with Daily Strike, Power Strike and Epic jackpots.
  • Fire Blaze: Playtech’s hold-and-respin series with four jackpots in every game.
  • PowerPlay: another Playtech jackpot range.

Jackpot Slots We’ve Reviewed, by RTP

Here are some jackpot slots we’ve reviewed, with the RTP figure listed in each review. Where a studio confirmed the figure, we say so. Always check the help screen, as casinos can offer different versions.

Slot Jackpot type RTP in our review
Greedy Goblins (Betsoft) Progressive 97.20% (confirmed by Betsoft)
Tsai Shen’s Gift (Playtech) Fire Blaze, four jackpots 96.50%
Sands of Fury (Playtech) Kingdoms Rise, three progressives 96.23%
Guardians of the Abyss (Playtech) Kingdoms Rise, three progressives 96.06%
King of the Underworld (Playtech) Age of the Gods, four progressives 96.02%
King of Olympus (Playtech) Age of the Gods, four progressives 95.98%
Furious 4 (Playtech) Age of the Gods, four progressives 94.88%
Immortal Romance Mega Moolah Mega Moolah, four progressives 93.40%
Fortunium Gold Mega Moolah Mega Moolah, four progressives 92.67%

The pattern is clear. Games with smaller, more local jackpots tend to have higher RTPs. The giant wide-area networks like Mega Moolah usually have the lowest RTPs, because they fund the biggest prizes.

Which Jackpot Slot Should You Choose?

The best jackpot slot depends on what you want from it. Think about these questions:

  1. Do you want the biggest possible prize? Wide-area progressives like Mega Moolah offer the largest jackpots, but with a lower RTP.
  2. Do you want better long-term returns? Games with fixed or local jackpots often have higher RTPs.
  3. Do you need to bet the maximum? Some progressives need a certain bet level to qualify for the top jackpot.
  4. How much volatility can you handle? Jackpot slots are often high volatility, so wins can be spread out.
  5. What’s your budget? Decide how much you’ll spend before you start chasing a jackpot.

How Must-Drop Jackpots Work

Some jackpot networks use must-drop jackpots. Playtech’s Kingdoms Rise series is a good example. Its Daily Strike jackpot must be won every day by a set time.

Its Power Strike jackpot must be won before it reaches a set amount. As the deadline or limit gets closer, the jackpot is more likely to drop soon. That makes must-drop jackpots a little more predictable than open-ended progressives.

The Epic jackpot in the same series has no upper limit. It works more like a traditional progressive, growing until someone wins it.

Jackpot Slots and Casino Bonuses

Jackpot slots and casino bonuses don’t always mix. Many casinos exclude jackpot games from their bonus offers. Others let you play them, but the bets count less towards the wagering requirements.

Some casinos also stop you from winning a progressive jackpot while playing with bonus funds. Always read the bonus terms before you use a bonus on a jackpot game.

Can You Play Jackpot Slots for Free?

Many casinos offer demo versions of slots. With progressive jackpot games, though, the jackpot itself is usually not available in demo mode. You can still learn the base game and features for free.

If you want to practise, try the demo first. It’s a free way to learn the bonus features and see how often the game pays. Then decide whether the real money version is right for you.

Tips for Playing Jackpot Slots

These tips can help you get the most from jackpot slots and avoid unpleasant surprises:

  • Choose a licensed casino: check reliable reviews and the casino’s licence before you sign up.
  • Read the jackpot rules: check whether you need a minimum bet to win the top prize.
  • Check the RTP: open the help screen before you play.
  • Read the bonus terms: some casino bonuses exclude jackpot slots.
  • Try the demo first: learn the features before you bet real money.
  • Set a budget: jackpots are rare, so never chase one with money you can’t afford to lose.
Topboss Group tip: Some casino bonuses don’t allow jackpot slots, or they count less towards wagering. Read the bonus terms before you play a jackpot game with bonus funds.

Do Jackpots Make a Slot Worth Playing?

It depends on why you play. If you enjoy the dream of a huge prize, a jackpot slot can add real excitement to every spin.

If you care more about long, steady sessions, a standard slot with a higher RTP may suit you better. Our list of the highest RTP slots is a good place to compare non-jackpot games too. You can also see our top 20 high RTP slots.
