What Happened to the Beowulf Slot?
Beowulf was one of Quickspin’s early adventure slots. It brought the famous Old English poem to life, with comic book style art and some clever bonus features. For a while, it was a popular choice at casinos that carried Quickspin games.
Today, though, Beowulf no longer appears in Quickspin’s game portfolio. The studio’s page for the game has also been taken down. Game studios often retire older titles to make room for newer releases, and that seems to be what has happened here.
Because of this, we’ve updated our review. Instead of telling you where to play Beowulf, we’ll explain what made it special and point you to similar Quickspin slots that are still available.

The Story Behind the Slot
Beowulf is one of the oldest surviving poems in the English language. It’s an epic of more than 3,000 lines, written in Old English. The story is set in Scandinavia and follows a brave warrior called Beowulf.
In the poem, Beowulf battles three fearsome enemies. First, he fights the monster Grendel, who has been terrorising the hall of King Hrothgar. Next, he faces Grendel’s vengeful mother. Finally, many years later, he takes on a fire-breathing dragon.
The story has inspired many films and books. For example, a computer-animated film was released in 2007. It starred Ray Winstone as Beowulf, with Anthony Hopkins, Robin Wright and Angelina Jolie.
Beowulf has been thrilling audiences for more than a thousand years. Quickspin’s slot gave the ancient tale a fun, comic book makeover.
Theme and Design
Quickspin’s Beowulf slot had a bold, comic book look. Beowulf himself stood beside the reels, in front of a snowy mountain, ready for battle. Grendel looked suitably frightening, with green skin, glaring eyes and a necklace of skulls.
The higher-value symbols showed characters from the poem. These included King Hrothgar, Queen Wealhtheow and the young warrior Wiglaf. Meanwhile, the lower-value symbols were playing card letters with a Celtic-style design. A dramatic soundtrack added to the sense of adventure.
How the Beowulf Slot Worked
Based on our original review, Beowulf used 5 reels, 3 rows and 25 paylines. You won by lining up matching symbols from left to right. On top of that, there were several bonus features that set it apart from simpler slots.
Wild Symbols
The game had more than one Wild symbol. A golden horn acted as the standard Wild, standing in for most other symbols. In addition, Sword and Dragon symbols played a special role during the free spins, as we explain below.
Grendel Attack
Grendel Attack was a random feature that could start on any spin. When it triggered, the sky above the reels turned red, and Grendel’s monsters appeared. Beowulf then stepped forward to fight them.
For each monster Beowulf slayed, you won a re-spin. Then, when he returned to his spot, a set of stacked Wilds landed on the reels. These Wilds stayed locked in place for all of your re-spins. As a result, this feature could lead to some big wins.
Free Spins and the Dragon Fight
Landing three or more Dragon scatter symbols triggered the free spins. The more scatters you landed, the more free spins you received.
During the free spins, the Dragon Fight took place. Health bars appeared for both Beowulf and the Dragon. Every time a Sword symbol landed, it became a Wild that stayed in place, and the Dragon lost some health. On the other hand, when a Dragon symbol landed, it also acted as a Wild, but Beowulf lost some health.
The fight ended when one side ran out of health. If Beowulf won, you received extra free spins. This made the free spins feel like a real battle, with a story unfolding as you played.
RTP and Betting
Our original review listed Beowulf’s RTP at 97.21%, which was well above average for an online slot. RTP stands for “return to player”. It’s the share of all bets a slot pays back over millions of spins.
Because the game is no longer listed by Quickspin, we can’t confirm these figures today. If you’re looking for slots with a high RTP that you can still play, see our list of the best paying slots.
Can You Still Play Beowulf?
It’s unlikely. Since Quickspin no longer lists the game, most casinos will have removed it from their lobbies. Even if you find it at an older casino, there’s no guarantee it will stay available.
If you do come across Beowulf somewhere, check the game’s help screen before you play. That way, you’ll know its current RTP and rules. Also, make sure the casino holds a proper licence.
Quickspin Slots to Play Instead
The good news is that Quickspin still makes plenty of great slots with a fairy tale or adventure feel. Here are some we recommend:
- Big Bad Wolf, Quickspin’s award-winning Three Little Pigs slot, with Swooping Reels and pigs that turn wild.
- Goldilocks and the Wild Bears, another classic story brought to life with fun bonus features.
- Dragon Shrine and Dragon Chase, two dragon-themed Quickspin slots that are still in the studio’s portfolio.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Beowulf slot still available?
Probably not. Quickspin no longer lists Beowulf in its game portfolio, and its official game page has been removed. Most casinos are likely to have taken it down.
Who made the Beowulf slot?
Beowulf was made by Quickspin, the Swedish slot studio behind games like Big Bad Wolf.
What were the main bonus features?
The main features were the random Grendel Attack, which added locked stacked Wilds, and the Dragon Fight free spins, where Beowulf battled a dragon for extra spins.
Is the Dragon in the slot Grendel’s mother?
No. In the poem, Grendel’s mother and the dragon are two different enemies. Beowulf fights Grendel, then his mother, and finally a dragon many years later.
What can I play instead of Beowulf?
We recommend Big Bad Wolf and Goldilocks and the Wild Bears, both by Quickspin. Dragon Shrine and Dragon Chase are also good options if you like dragon themes.
