Dragon King Slot Review
Dragon King is a Chinese-themed video slot from GameArt. It sends you to an ancient mountain kingdom, where a wise dragon rules the reels. The game is simple to learn and quick to play.
It has five reels and 50 fixed paylines. As a result, you never need to pick lines. The main attraction is a free spins round that can retrigger. A gamble feature sits on top for players who like to take a risk.
The figures on this page come from our original review of the game. GameArt’s own site now lists a different game called Dragon King Megaways, and we could not find a game page for this original version. We explain the difference further down, so you know which one you are looking at.

Theme And Presentation
The backdrop shows a Chinese mountain range at dusk. An orange glow spreads over the peaks, and the mood is calm and a little mystical. Drum rolls add a sense of tension as the reels settle.
The colour palette is built around red and black. Those shades give the game a royal feel. Even so, the screen stays clean, so the symbols are easy to read.
In Chinese myth, the dragon is a wise and powerful creature. Legend says it helps people in their hour of need. That idea runs through the whole slot, and it fits the generous free spins round well.
Dragon King Symbols
The symbol set is easy to follow. Card ranks from 9 to Ace make up the low-paying group. They land often, so they keep the base game moving with small wins.
The premium symbols are more colourful. They include a crown, a fish, a turtle, a ribbon ornament and the Money Frog. Together, they pay the best line wins outside the features.
| Symbol | Value | Role |
|---|---|---|
| 9, 10, J, Q, K, A | Low | Frequent small wins |
| Crown, fish, turtle, ribbon ornament | Higher | Better line wins |
| Money Frog | Highest | Top regular symbol |
| Dragon King | Wild | Substitutes for all but the scatter |
| Lucky Coin | Scatter | Triggers free spins |
The Dragon King Wild
The Dragon King himself is the wild symbol. He replaces every regular symbol to complete a winning line. The only symbol he cannot replace is the Lucky Coin scatter.
Wilds matter more than usual on a 50 payline slot. With so many lines in play, one wild can finish several wins at once. That is why the free spins round, where extra dragons appear, can feel so lively.
Lucky Coin Scatter And Free Spins
The Lucky Coin is the scatter. It can only land on reels 2, 3 and 4. Because of that limit, the feature does not trigger on every other spin.
Land three Lucky Coins, one on each of those reels, and you win 5 free spins. During the round, extra Stacked Dragons appear on the bonus reels. Stacked symbols help to fill whole reels, so they raise your chance of big line wins.
The round can also retrigger. If you land another set of scatters during the free spins, more spins are added to your countdown automatically. The retrigger is the main route to the larger wins in this game.
The Gamble Feature
Dragon King also includes a gamble feature. After a win, you can choose to play it or simply collect. Playing is optional.
The gamble works like a card game. You guess the colour of a spinning card. A correct guess doubles your win. A wrong guess sends you back to the main game with nothing from that round.
Gambles are pure chance. They give the house no extra edge on paper, but they put your win at risk. For that reason, many players use them sparingly or skip them completely.
| Gamble result | What happens |
|---|---|
| Correct colour | Your win is doubled |
| Wrong colour | You lose that win and return to the main game |
Dragon King Versus Dragon King Megaways
The name can cause confusion. GameArt’s games page now lists Dragon King Megaways, a separate game. GameArt shows it with a release date of 2 June 2024.
According to GameArt, that game has six cascading reels and up to 117,649 ways to win. Its free spins offer up to 25 spins and multipliers up to x25, and players pick one of seven options at the start of the round. It also has a buy-bonus option.
None of that applies to the original 50 payline game reviewed here. The original uses fixed paylines, a coin scatter and a simple 5 free spins round. If you want the cascading Megaways version, search for the Megaways title by name.
| Point | Dragon King (original) | Dragon King Megaways |
|---|---|---|
| Win structure | 50 fixed paylines | Up to 117,649 ways |
| Reels | 5 | 6, with cascades |
| Free spins | 5 to start, retriggers | Up to 25, with multipliers |
| Buy bonus | Not mentioned | Yes, per GameArt |
GameArt also named Dragon King among its first batch of jackpot titles in July 2017, according to industry press. That batch came in both standard and jackpot versions. Check which version your casino offers before you play.
RTP And Volatility
We could not confirm an official RTP or volatility for the original game. We would rather say so than quote a guess. Casinos can also set different RTP versions of the same slot.
The best fix is simple. Open the game’s info or help screen before you place a bet. It will show the exact RTP your casino uses. Our guide to RTP and online slots explains what the number means.
Playing On Mobile
GameArt builds its slots for desktop and mobile. The reels on this game are clear, and the controls are simple. A 50 payline layout still fits neatly on a phone screen.
Mobile play suits short sessions. Even so, set a time limit first. The drum rolls and quick free spins can make time pass faster than you expect.
How To Play Dragon King
- Open the info screen and check the RTP and paytable.
- Choose a total bet that fits your budget.
- Spin the reels and watch reels 2, 3 and 4 for Lucky Coins.
- Enjoy the free spins and any retriggers.
- Decide in advance whether you will ever use the gamble feature.
Tips For Dragon King
No tip can change the odds, because every spin is random. Still, a few habits make the game more enjoyable.
Try a demo first, if your casino offers one. It shows how rarely the scatters land. As a result, you can set a realistic bet.
Keep the stake low enough to survive a dry spell. The feature needs three coins on three specific reels, so it can take a while.
Finally, treat the gamble feature with care. Doubling a win feels great, but one wrong guess removes it.
Pros And Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| 50 fixed paylines, nothing to set up | Only 5 free spins to start |
| Free spins can retrigger | Scatters only land on three reels |
| Stacked dragons during the bonus | RTP could not be confirmed |
| Clear, attractive Chinese theme | Basic feature set by modern standards |
Who Is Dragon King For?
This slot suits players who like simple, classic video slots. It also works for anyone who enjoys Asian themes. The rules take a minute to learn.
If you want a modern bonus buy or a huge multiplier, look elsewhere. The Megaways version may suit you better.
