Book of Gates Slot Overview
Book of Gates is an Egyptian slot from BF Games, released on 25 August 2020. It takes the familiar “Book of” theme and adds a twist. Three locked rows sit above the reels, and every win can open one of them.

BF Games lists the RTP at 96.03% and rates the game as medium volatility. With all rows open, there are up to 32,768 ways to win. The maximum win is 750x your bet, which is much lower than the figure in our original review.

Theme and Design
Book of Gates is set in ancient Egypt, among pyramids and temples. A god floats above the reels, holding the magical Book of Gates. Three heavy doors sit above the reels, locked until you earn the right to open them.
The game looks polished and detailed. The gods Ra, Osiris, Bastet and Chnum all feature in the story. A priestess, a Pharaoh’s mask and other Egyptian symbols fill the reels.
How the Expanding Reels Work
The main feature is the set of locked rows. Three of the top rows hide behind closed doors. To open them, you need to land a win in the base game.
When you win, one row unlocks and you get a respin. If the respin also wins, another row unlocks. This continues until you stop winning or all three rows are open.
BF Games lists the layout as 5 reels with 2 to 8 rows. The ways to win range from 3,125 up to 32,768. The more rows you open, the more ways you have to win.
Betting, RTP and Volatility
BF Games lists a bet range of 0.10 to 100 EUR per spin. Our original review gave the maximum bet as $200, so this has changed.
The RTP is 96.03%, which matches our original review. BF Games rates the volatility as medium and lists an 18% hit rate. That means roughly one spin in five or six produces a win.
The top win is 750x your bet, according to BF Games. Our original review listed an 11,000x jackpot, which isn’t supported by the studio’s figures.
Book of Gates Symbols
BF Games doesn’t list the paytable on its website. Our original review described these symbols:
- Wild: a Pharaoh’s mask that substitutes for other symbols, except the scatter.
- Scatter: the Book of Gates, which triggers the free spins.
- Higher-paying symbols: a goat, a bird, a god, a Pharaoh’s mask and a priestess.
- Lower-paying symbols: six card symbols in different colours.
Book of Gates Bonus Features
BF Games lists four in-game features:
- Wild symbol: substitutes for every symbol except the scatter.
- Scatter symbol: starts the bonus round.
- Expanding reels: wins unlock extra rows and trigger respins.
- Free games: three scatters award 10 free spins.
Respins and Expanding Reels
Every win in the base game unlocks a row and gives you a respin. Our original review called this the Superlines feature. Each extra row adds more ways to win on the next respin.
The chain ends when a respin doesn’t win, or when all three rows are open. Then the reels reset for the next spin.
Free Spins
Land three of the Book scatter symbols to trigger 10 free spins. BF Games confirms this on its game page. It’s a simple, classic free spins round in the style of other “Book of” games.
How to Play Book of Gates
- Check the help screen: confirm the RTP and bet range at your casino.
- Set your stake: choose a bet between 0.10 and 100.
- Spin the reels: any win unlocks a row and triggers a respin.
- Open the gates: keep winning to reach 8 rows and 32,768 ways.
- Find three books: this starts 10 free spins.
Who Is Book of Gates Best For?
Book of Gates suits players who like the “Book of” theme but want something a little different. The opening gates add a fun chain reaction to the base game.
It’s a good fit if you:
- Enjoy Egyptian slots: the theme and symbols will feel familiar.
- Like medium volatility: wins are balanced between size and frequency.
- Prefer base game action: the respins keep things moving between bonuses.
Players chasing very large wins may prefer a game with a higher top payout.

Book of Gates vs Classic “Book of” Slots
Most “Book of” slots follow the same recipe. They have 10 paylines, a book that acts as wild and scatter, and free spins with an expanding symbol. Book of Gates borrows the theme but changes the gameplay.
| Feature | Book of Gates | Typical “Book of” slot |
|---|---|---|
| Ways to win | 3,125 to 32,768 | Usually 10 paylines |
| Base game feature | Respins that open extra rows | Often none |
| Free spins | 10 free spins | Usually 10, with an expanding symbol |
| Volatility | Medium | Often high |
The big difference is the base game. In many “Book of” slots, the base game is quiet until the free spins arrive. In Book of Gates, every win can open a gate and set off a chain of respins.
Tips for Playing Book of Gates
- Try the demo first: it’s the easiest way to see how the gates open.
- Watch the hit rate: at 18%, plenty of spins won’t win, so pace your budget.
- Enjoy the respins: a single win can lead to a long chain with more rows.
- Keep your stake steady: the max win is 750x, so big bets won’t change the ceiling.
- Set limits: decide how much you’ll spend before you start.
Every spin is random, so these tips won’t change the odds. They’ll simply help you enjoy the game at a sensible pace.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Up to 32,768 ways to win
- Respins and expanding rows after every win
- Solid 96.03% RTP
- Medium volatility suits most players
Cons
- Max win is only 750x
- Simple free spins round
- 18% hit rate means many losing spins
- Familiar theme
Our Verdict
Book of Gates puts a fresh spin on a very familiar theme. The locked gates and respins make the base game more exciting than most “Book of” slots. With a 96.03% RTP and medium volatility, it’s a balanced game. The 750x max win is modest, though. If you like Egyptian slots with a bit of extra action, it’s well worth a try.
