UK Online casino rules have changed a lot since 2020, and some of the biggest changes only kicked in over the last year or so. If you play at a licensed UK casino, here’s what’s actually different now, and what it means for you.

Self-exclusion: GamStop, required at every licensed casino
Make sure the casino is actually licensed
Any site that legally accepts UK players must hold a current UK Gambling Commission licence. You can look up a licence number on the UKGC’s website before you sign up. Some sites market themselves to players who’ve self-excluded by pointing out they don’t use GamStop. Those sites aren’t licensed here, so if anything goes wrong, there’s no one to complain to and no protection for you. There are now limits on how much you can bet per spin
Since 2025, every licensed UK casino has to cap how much you can stake on a single slot spin: £5 if you’re 25 or older, and £2 if you’re 18 to 24. This isn’t something casinos choose to offer, it’s a rule they all have to follow.
Casinos now have to check you can afford what you’re spending
Since February 2025, once you’ve deposited more than £150 in a rolling 30-day period, the casino has to run a basic check on whether you can afford it. At this lower level, it’s usually done quietly in the background, for example checking public records like County Court Judgments, so you won’t normally need to send in any documents. Bigger spenders may face more detailed checks.
Bonus offers changed too
From January 2026, casinos can no longer combine different types of bonus into one offer, for example bundling a slots bonus with a sports betting bonus. And the amount you need to wager before you can withdraw bonus winnings is now capped at 10 times the bonus, well below the 30 to 50 times that used to be common.
You’ll see fewer gambling ads around live sport
Gambling ads are now banned from TV during live sport, from just before kick-off to just after the final whistle. Casinos also can’t sign you up for marketing emails, texts, or app notifications with one generic tickbox anymore. You have to opt in separately for each type.
GamStop and taking a break
Every licensed UK casino has had to check against GamStop, the national self-exclusion scheme, since 2020. Over 562,000 people are currently signed up. You can exclude yourself for 6 months, 1 year, or 5 years, and you can’t undo it early once you’ve chosen. One thing worth knowing: GamStop only covers licensed UK sites, so it won’t stop you signing up somewhere unlicensed if you go looking. That’s one more reason to stick to licensed casinos only.

On top of everything above, licensed casinos also have to let you set deposit and loss limits, set time limits with reminders while you play, wait through a cooling-off period before you can raise your own limits, and give you access to an independent complaints service if you can’t resolve an issue directly with them.
