Thunderstruck Slot Review by Microgaming
Thunderstruck is a Norse themed video slot from Microgaming. It arrived in May 2004 and quickly became one of the best-loved slots online. More than two decades later, players still search for it.
The game has five reels, three rows and nine paylines. Thor the god of thunder is the wild. Rams are the scatter, and the free spins carry a 3x multiplier.
This review explains the symbols, the free spins and the bet range. We also cover the RTP, the smartwatch version and who the slot suits.

Why Thunderstruck Is Still Popular
Thunderstruck is simple. It has one wild, one scatter and one bonus round. There are no cascades or cluster mechanics to learn.
That simplicity is part of the charm. The pace is fast, and the rules take only a minute to learn. As a result, new players feel at home right away. Veterans also enjoy it, because it offers a calm break from busier modern games.
The slot also helped set the pattern for Norse myth games. Many later titles borrowed its ideas. We list several of them further down, along with the newer sequels.
Theme, Graphics and Sound
The reels sit against a dark, stormy backdrop. Lightning bolts flash across the screen when wins land. The look is dated by today’s standards, but it has a classic charm.
The sound is moody and dramatic. Thunder rolls as the reels spin, and lightning cracks when Thor lands. Meanwhile, the big wins come with a satisfying burst of noise.
Betting Range
The coin range runs from 0.01 to 45 coins. That suits most budgets, though high rollers may find the top stake limited.
Low to medium volatility means smaller bets can last a good while. That helps if you want a relaxed session.
Symbols and Paytable
Storm related symbols tie in with the legend of Thor. On the reels you will find Thor, his hammer, a cornucopia, a fist, a stormy castle and bolts of lightning. The lower paying symbols are standard card values.
| Symbol | Role |
|---|---|
| Thor | Wild, doubles the wins he completes |
| Rams | Scatter |
| Thor’s hammer | High paying symbol |
| Cornucopia | Mid paying symbol |
| Thor’s fist | Mid paying symbol |
| Stormy castle | Mid paying symbol |
| Lightning bolt | Mid paying symbol |
| Card values | Low paying symbols |
Thor’s hammer is the most rewarding standard symbol. Check the in-game paytable for the exact values.
Wild and Scatter Symbols
Thor Wild
Thor himself is the wild. He replaces every symbol except the rams. When he helps form a win, that win is doubled.
Ram Scatter
The scatter is a pair of rams. Three or more rams anywhere on the reels trigger the free spins. Scatter wins are paid before the bonus begins, and they are multiplied by your total bet.
Free Spins with a 3x Multiplier
Three or more rams award 15 free spins. The big feature is the multiplier. Every win in the round is tripled.
Thor’s wild doubling also applies. So a win that includes Thor can pay six times its normal value.
You can retrigger the round. Three or more rams during the free spins award 15 more spins.
| Free spin detail | Value |
|---|---|
| Trigger | 3 or more rams |
| Spins awarded | 15 |
| Multiplier | 3x on all wins |
| Wild doubling | Stacks with the multiplier |
| Retrigger | 15 more spins |
Max Win
Fill the reels with Thor wilds and you can win up to 10,000 coins on a single spin. That is a classic top prize for a slot of this age.
Newer slots often list much higher maximums. Even so, Thunderstruck gives you steady play and a solid free spins round.
Smartwatch Version
Microgaming adapted Thunderstruck for smartwatches in 2015. It became one of the few online slots to run on a tiny wrist screen.
Read more in our guide to smartwatch gambling at online casinos. The slot also runs on desktop, mobile and tablet.
RTP and Volatility
The RTP is 96.1%. That is a little above the 96% that many slots offer. Over a very long run, the game returns about $96.10 for every $100 staked.
Short sessions vary a lot. Luck decides the result in the short term. Our guide to RTP and online slots explains the figure in plain English.
Volatility is low to medium. Wins come at a steady pace, though the best payouts still need patience. For higher return games, see our list of best paying slots.
How to Play Thunderstruck
- Choose your coin value and the number of coins to bet.
- Press spin and watch for Thor on the reels.
- Look for three rams to open the free spins.
- Use the autoplay option only with a firm loss limit.
The rules are quick to learn. Even so, a short run in demo mode shows how the free spins feel before you stake real money.
Thunderstruck Then and Now
Slots have changed a lot since 2004. The table compares the original with a typical modern game.
| Point | Thunderstruck (2004) | Modern slot |
|---|---|---|
| Bonus features | One free spins round | Often several features |
| Graphics | Simple 2D art | Detailed 3D art |
| Pace | Fast and easy | Often more complex |
| Max win | Modest | Often far higher |
The original still wins on simplicity. If you enjoy a calm, easy session, it remains a good pick.
Strategy and Bankroll Tips
- Pick a stake that gives you at least 150 spins.
- Aim for the free spins, since the 3x multiplier is the main prize.
- Do not raise your stake after a loss.
- Set a loss limit before you start.
- Take regular breaks.
No tip changes the odds. Each spin is random, and past results never affect the next one.
Mobile and Demo Play
Thunderstruck works on desktop, smartphones and tablets. You can enjoy every feature at home or on the move.
Many casinos offer a free demo. Use it to see how the free spins feel and how often Thor lands. Our guide to free online slots explains how to practise safely.
The Thunderstruck Family
Microgaming has built a whole series around this slot. The follow-ups add new features and better graphics.
- Try the Wild Lightning slot for 40 paylines and a Link and Win bonus.
- Read about Stormchaser for a newer take from the same family.

Playing Responsibly
Classic slots are easy to play for long stretches. Set a budget before you start, and keep to it.
Use deposit limits and reality checks if your casino offers them. Never chase losses. Stop if gambling stops being fun.
