About the Studio
The business grew out of the team’s earlier work through LM Design Werks, a service studio involved in casino game design and development. It later shifted its focus towards creating its own real-money casino content under the Old Skool Studios name.
One of its early breakthrough releases was Epic City, which launched in 2014 and helped establish the developer in the online casino market. The game was subsequently made available at several well-known operators, including Mr Green and LeoVegas.
The company now describes itself as an exclusive Games Global content partner, placing its titles within one of the largest casino content distribution networks in the industry. You can find more current company information on the official Old Skool Studios website.
Casino Slots and Games
The developer concentrates mainly on video slots rather than producing a broad range of table games, live casino products or instant-win titles.
Its releases tend to feature detailed artwork, strong themes and familiar bonus features. The catalogue is considerably smaller than those of the largest casino software suppliers, but the focus has traditionally been on producing a limited number of more heavily designed games.
Popular Games
Some of the titles associated with Old Skool Studios include:
- 6 Rubies of Tribute
- Epic City
- Maui Mischief
- Ascension: Rise to Riches
- Jewel Quest Riches
- Rubies of Tribute
Availability can vary between casinos and jurisdictions, particularly as older releases may no longer be distributed by every operator.
Games Global Partnership
One of the most important changes since our original review is the developer’s relationship with Games Global.
Old Skool Studios currently identifies itself as an exclusive Games Global content partner. This gives its games a distribution route to online casinos connected to the Games Global network.
Historically, some titles were distributed through Microgaming’s Quickfire platform. Those older Quickfire references are useful for understanding the studio’s history, but Games Global is the more relevant distribution relationship today.
Mobile and HTML5 Games
The studio develops its casino games using HTML5 technology, allowing titles to run directly in modern web browsers on desktop computers, smartphones and tablets.
The previous version of this review referred to devices such as Blackberry and older Windows mobile platforms. Those references are no longer relevant. Current games are designed for modern desktop and mobile browsers without requiring separate downloadable casino software.
Where Is the Company Based?
Old Skool Game Studios Inc. is based in North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
Current company information lists its address as 120 Lonsdale Avenue, North Vancouver, British Columbia V7M 2E8.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Experienced Canadian development studio
- Exclusive Games Global content partner
- HTML5 games for desktop and mobile
- Strong focus on artwork and storytelling
- Games distributed into regulated casino markets
Cons
- Smaller portfolio than major software providers
- Limited public information on newer releases
- Some older games may no longer be widely available
Our Verdict
Old Skool Studios is a relatively small developer compared with the industry’s biggest software companies, but it has been creating casino content for well over a decade.
Its strongest point is the visual and story-driven approach to slot development rather than the sheer size of its catalogue. The Games Global partnership also gives the company a strong distribution route into established online casinos.
We would like to see a larger stream of new releases, but the developer remains an interesting option for players who enjoy polished slots that are a little different from the mass-produced titles found at many casinos.
