What Happened to the Frankenstein Slot?
Frankenstein was one of NetEnt’s best-known horror slots. It was part of the studio’s Universal Monsters range, made under licence from Universal Pictures. For years, it was a firm favourite at casinos every October.
Today, though, Frankenstein no longer appears among NetEnt’s games. We checked both of NetEnt’s game websites in October 2026, and neither has a page for it. Branded slots like this one depend on a licence from the film studio. When that licence ends, the game usually has to go too.
NetEnt’s other branded horror games seem to have gone the same way. For instance, our review of the old Aliens slot explains how that film-based game also disappeared from casinos. So, rather than telling you where to play Frankenstein, we’ll explain what made it special and point you to similar games that are still available.

The Story Behind the Slot
Frankenstein began life as a novel by Mary Shelley, first published in 1818. It tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist who brings a creature to life. Horrified by what he has made, Victor abandons it, and tragedy follows for them both.
The story became even more famous through film. Universal’s 1931 movie, starring Boris Karloff as the monster, created the flat-headed, bolt-necked look most people picture today. NetEnt’s slot drew heavily on that classic Universal style.
More than two centuries after Mary Shelley wrote it, Frankenstein is still one of the best-loved horror stories ever told. NetEnt’s slot gave it an electric, modern twist.
Theme and Design
The slot was set inside Victor Frankenstein’s gloomy laboratory. Candles flickered, chains hung from the walls and old medical tools lay scattered about. Bolts of electricity crackled across the screen, while a dark soundtrack and distant thunder set the mood.
The symbols featured characters from the story. The monster was the top-paying symbol, joined by Dr Frankenstein and his assistant Fritz. Meanwhile, the lower-paying symbols were card ranks styled to look like rusted metal. As a result, the whole game felt like a scene from an old black-and-white horror film.
How the Frankenstein Slot Worked
Based on our original review, Frankenstein used 5 reels, 3 rows and 20 fixed paylines. You won by lining up matching symbols from left to right. On top of that, two special wild features made the game stand out.
Lightning Wilds
In the base game, Lightning Wilds could land on the middle reels. When one appeared, lightning struck nearby symbols and turned them into linked wilds too. So, a single wild could quickly spread across the reels and create several winning lines at once.
Free Spins and WildFire
A windmill scatter triggered the free spins. The windmill was a nod to the dramatic final scene of the 1931 film. Our original review said three or more windmills awarded 10 free spins.
During the free spins, the Lightning Wild was replaced by WildFire. This fiery wild worked in a similar way, spreading wilds across the reels. In addition, a multiplier could climb as the round went on. Together, these features gave the free spins the best chance of a big win.
RTP and Betting
Our original review listed Frankenstein’s RTP at 95.70%, with medium volatility. RTP stands for “return to player”. It’s the share of all bets a slot pays back over millions of spins.
Since NetEnt no longer lists the game, we can’t confirm these figures today. If you’re looking for slots with a strong RTP that you can still play, see our list of the best paying slots. Our guide to RTP and online slots also explains the basics in plain English.
Can You Still Play Frankenstein?
It’s very unlikely. Since NetEnt no longer lists the game, most casinos will have removed it from their lobbies. Even if you spot it at an older casino, there’s no guarantee it will stay available.
If you do come across Frankenstein somewhere, check the game’s help screen before you play. That way, you’ll know its current RTP and rules. Also, make sure the casino holds a proper licence. Our guide on how to find the best online casino explains what to look for.
Spooky NetEnt Slots to Play Instead
The good news is that NetEnt still offers several horror-themed slots. We checked each of these against NetEnt’s website in October 2026.
Blood Suckers II
Blood Suckers II is the closest match in spirit. It’s a gothic vampire slot set in a dark castle, with a 96.94% RTP. You get random features, free spins with tripled wins and a pick-and-click treasure bonus.
Halloween Jack
Halloween Jack stars a pumpkin-headed hero in a spooky town. Like Frankenstein, it’s built around exciting wild features, with walking wilds that move across the reels.
Blood Suckers
The original Blood Suckers is still going strong. NetEnt lists it with a 98% RTP, which makes it one of the highest-paying slots around.
NetEnt’s library also includes newer spooky titles, such as The Wolf’s Bane and What’s Up Witches. We haven’t reviewed these yet, but both are listed on NetEnt’s website today.
Other Horror Slots to Try
If you’d like to look beyond NetEnt, there are plenty of other options. RTG’s Witchy Wins brings a cauldron full of magic to the reels. For something lighter, Play’n GO’s Happy Halloween follows the Grave family on a trick-or-treat night out.
Fans of classic monsters may also enjoy Immortal Romance, a vampire love story with four free spins modes. And if it’s film-based games you’re after, our guide to the best movie themed slots rounds up plenty more.
You’ll find even more spooky games on our Halloween slots page.
