Extra Chilli Megaways Overview
Extra Chilli is a hot and spicy Megaways slot from Big Time Gaming. It followed the studio’s huge hit Bonanza, which arrived in 2017. Big Time Gaming says Extra Chilli “turns Bonanza on its head”. The excitement shifts to where the extra reel stops.
The story continues the adventures of José Cavadoré. After striking it rich in the Bonanza gold mine, José heads to Mexico. There, he trades his gems for the rare Purple Conquistador chilli. It’s said to be worth its weight in gold.
The game offers up to 117,649 ways to win. Big Time Gaming lists the RTP at 96.15% to 96.41%. That’s lower than the 96.82% in our original review, so we’ve updated it here. Two features made the game famous: Feature Drop and the Free Spins Gamble.

Theme and Design
Extra Chilli is set in a bustling Mexican food market. Stalls are piled high with sacks of chillies and garlic, and hawkers call out to passers-by. A mariachi-style soundtrack plays in the background, adding to the festive feel.
The symbols are crystallised chilli peppers in blue, green, red and violet. The violet chilli is the top regular symbol. Card royals from 9 to Ace make up the lower-paying symbols.
How Megaways Works in Extra Chilli
Extra Chilli has six main reels. Each reel shows a different number of symbols on every spin, from 2 up to 7. That changes the number of ways to win, up to a maximum of 117,649.
There’s also a horizontal reel below the main grid, under reels 2 to 5. It adds extra symbols to those reels. Big Time Gaming says the excitement in Extra Chilli shifts to where this extra reel stops.
Wins trigger reactions. Winning symbols disappear, and new ones drop in. Big Time Gaming calls the system Dual Reactions, because both the main reels and the extra reel react. If you’re new to the format, our Megaways slots guide explains it in more detail.
Betting, RTP and Volatility
Big Time Gaming lists the RTP as a range of 96.15% to 96.41%. The exact figure depends on the version your casino offers. Our original review gave a single figure of 96.82%, which is higher than Big Time Gaming’s current range.
Our original review listed a bet range of 0.20 to 50.00 per spin. It also gave a top win of 20,000x your stake in the free spins. Check the help screen at your casino for the exact figures.
Extra Chilli is a high volatility game. Expect long quiet spells, with the chance of very big wins when the free spins multiplier gets going.
Extra Chilli Symbols
Our original review listed these symbols:
- Violet chilli: the top symbol, paying 2x, 5x, 10x, 25x or 50x your stake for 2 to 6 in a row.
- Red, green and blue chillies: the other premium symbols.
- A, K, Q, J, 10 and 9: the lower-paying card royals.
- Fireworks wild: lands only on the extra reel and replaces regular symbols.
- H.O.T. scatters: golden letters that trigger the free spins.
Extra Chilli Bonus Features
Big Time Gaming lists four key features:
- Megaways: up to 117,649 ways to win.
- Dual Reactions: winning symbols are replaced on both the main reels and the extra reel.
- Feature Drop: lets you buy entry into the free spins at any time.
- Free Spins Gamble: risk your free spins for the chance to win more.
Feature Drop
Big Time Gaming says Feature Drop lets you trigger the free spins whenever you like. A meter below the reels shows the current price. Our original review said the price can fall each time a Feature Drop symbol lands.
Buy features aren’t allowed in every country. If you don’t see the Feature Drop option, it’s likely blocked where you live.
Free Spins
Land the H.O.T. scatters to trigger the free spins. In our original review, 3 scatters awarded 8 free spins. Each extra scatter added 4 more.
During the free spins, the multiplier starts at 1x. It rises by 1 after every win and has no upper limit. Landing chilli bowl symbols on the extra reel can add more free spins.
Free Spins Gamble
This is one of the game’s best-known features. Before the free spins start, you can gamble them on a wheel for the chance to win more.
Big Time Gaming says you can gamble up to 24 free spins. The first gamble is a straight 50/50. Every gamble after that is tilted 60/40 in your favour. Your free spins are locked in on the second-to-last gamble.
If a gamble fails, you can still lose some or all of your spins. So, it’s a real risk, but one many players enjoy.
How to Play Extra Chilli
- Check the help screen: confirm the RTP version and bet range at your casino.
- Set your stake: choose a bet that suits a high volatility game.
- Spin the reels: wins trigger reactions on the main and extra reels.
- Collect the H.O.T. scatters: three or more start the free spins.
- Decide on the gamble: collect your spins or gamble for up to 24.
Extra Chilli vs Bonanza
Bonanza came first, in 2017, and it became one of the most popular slots ever. Big Time Gaming says it had over 1 million active players.
Extra Chilli keeps the same Megaways engine and unlimited free spins multiplier. The differences are the theme, the extra reel’s bigger role, Feature Drop and the Free Spins Gamble. If you enjoyed Bonanza, Extra Chilli is a natural next step.
Who Is Extra Chilli Best For?
Extra Chilli suits players who enjoy high volatility and big multipliers. The gamble feature also appeals to players who like a bit of extra risk.
It’s a good fit if you:
- Love Megaways games: this is one of the classics.
- Enjoy taking risks: the gamble can boost or wipe out your spins.
- Chase big wins: the unlimited multiplier can grow very large.
If you prefer steady, low-risk play, a lower volatility slot may suit you better.
Playing Extra Chilli on Mobile
Big Time Gaming lists Extra Chilli for mobile and desktop, built in HTML5. It runs in your phone’s browser with no download. The Megaways grid can look busy, but the symbols are large and clear.

Our Verdict
Extra Chilli is a Megaways classic for good reason. The unlimited multiplier makes the free spins exciting, and the gamble wheel adds a real thrill. The RTP range is a little lower than we first reported, so check which version you’re playing. If you enjoy big swings and bold features, this one is still red hot.
