Buffalo Slot Overview
Buffalo is a wildlife slot from Aristocrat that has become a casino floor legend. Herds of buffalo thunder across the reels, joined by eagles, deer and big cats.
The game plays on 5 reels with 1,024 ways to win. There are no fixed paylines. Matching symbols on neighbouring reels, from left to right, form a win wherever they land.
The free games are the highlight. Sunset wilds can carry 2x or 3x multipliers, and they multiply each other. Our original review said that could boost a win by up to 27x.

Theme and Design
Buffalo is set on the open plains of North America. The sun sets behind the reels, and the animals stand out against the warm orange sky. It’s a simple look, but it’s instantly recognisable.
Our original review praised the crisp graphics, animation and sound effects. Together, they give the game an exciting wildlife feel.
How 1,024 Ways Works
Buffalo doesn’t use fixed paylines. Instead, it has 1,024 ways to win. You need matching symbols on neighbouring reels, starting from the leftmost reel. They can land in any position on each reel.
This makes wins easier to follow than on a slot with dozens of zigzag lines. It also means stacked symbols, like the buffalo, can create several wins at once.
Buffalo Symbols
Our original review listed these symbols:
- Buffalo: the top symbol, which lands stacked.
- Eagle, deer and tiger: the other animal symbols listed in our original review.
- Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10 and 9: the card royals.
- Sunset: the wild symbol.
- Gold coin: the scatter.
In our original review, five buffalo in a row paid 300 credits, and four paid 100 credits. Because the buffalo lands stacked, a full screen can deliver several of these wins on one spin.
Sunset Wild
The sunset is the wild symbol. It only appears on reels 2, 3 and 4. It replaces every symbol except the gold coin scatter.
In the free games, the sunset wild gets even better. Each one carries a 2x or 3x multiplier. If more than one is part of the same win, the multipliers multiply together. Three 3x wilds give a 27x boost.
Gold Coin Free Games
The gold coin is the scatter. It pays wherever it lands, and it triggers the free games. Our original review listed this table:
| Gold coins | Free games |
|---|---|
| 3 | 8 |
| 4 | 15 |
| 5 | 20 |
During the free games, landing 2 or more gold coins adds 5 more free games. That means a good round can keep going for a long time.
How to Play Buffalo
- Check the help screen: look at the RTP and bet options at your casino.
- Set your bet: choose a stake that fits your budget.
- Spin the reels: wins pay on 1,024 ways from left to right.
- Watch for stacked buffalo: they can fill several reels at once.
- Land three gold coins: this starts 8 to 20 free games with multiplier wilds.
The Buffalo Series
Buffalo’s success turned it into one of the biggest brands in slots. Aristocrat has released many follow-ups, and its website now features titles such as:
- Buffalo Link: a hold and spin game with buffalo-themed action.
- Buffalo Chief: bigger stacks and 3,456 ways in the base game.
- Buffalo Gold Revolution: a wheel bonus, free games and wild multipliers.
- Buffalo Grand: sunset wilds, higher-paying symbols and a bonus twist.
- Buffalo Triple Power and Buffalo Ultimate Stampede: other titles in the series.
Many of these are land-based games, so availability online varies by country.
Who Is Buffalo Best For?
Buffalo suits players who enjoy classic casino floor slots. It’s simple to follow, and the free games can be exciting.
It’s a good fit if you:
- Love the land-based feel: this is a true casino classic.
- Like multipliers: the sunset wilds can stack up to 27x.
- Enjoy simple rules: no complicated features to learn.

What We Changed in This Review

- Figures: we’ve marked the paytable and free games details as coming from our original review.
- Structure: we’ve added an at-a-glance table, playing steps, pros and cons, and FAQs.
Tips for Playing Buffalo
Buffalo is easy to pick up, but a few simple habits can help you enjoy it more:
- Check the bet options: land-based versions often use credits, so understand your total bet.
- Be patient for the free games: the multiplier wilds there are where the big wins come from.
- Watch the stacked buffalo: a full stack on several reels can pay on many ways at once.
- Set a budget: decide how much you’ll spend before you start.
- Take breaks: a classic like Buffalo is easy to keep playing for too long.
Why Is Buffalo So Popular?
Buffalo became a favourite thanks to a simple mix. The 1,024 ways make wins easy to follow. The stacked buffalo can fill the screen. And the multiplying wilds in the free games give every bonus the chance of a big result.
That formula has kept Buffalo going for years. Aristocrat has built a whole family of games around it, from Buffalo Gold Revolution to Buffalo Link. Each one keeps the herd but adds new features.
If you’ve played one of the newer Buffalo games, the original is worth trying. It shows where the series began.
How the Wild Multipliers Add Up
In the free games, each sunset wild carries a 2x or 3x multiplier. When more than one wild is part of a win, the multipliers multiply together. Here’s how that works:
| Wilds in the win | Example multipliers | Total boost |
|---|---|---|
| One wild | 3x | 3x |
| Two wilds | 2x and 3x | 6x |
| Two wilds | 3x and 3x | 9x |
| Three wilds | 3x, 3x and 3x | 27x |
The sunset wild only lands on reels 2, 3 and 4. So, three wilds is the most you can have in a single win. That’s why 27x is the top boost.
