Aztec Wilds Slot Overview
Aztec Wilds is a jungle adventure slot from Iron Dog Studio. It sends you deep into the South American rainforest in search of a sealed temple full of Aztec treasure.
The game runs on a 4×5 grid of stone tiles. Every win makes the stones crumble, and new ones tumble down to take their place. Land enough tumbles in a row, and you’re pulled inside the temple for free spins with a multiplier of up to 6x.
What makes Aztec Wilds stand out is its three types of wilds. Standard, sticky and expanding wilds can all appear in the base game. As a result, even a normal spin can turn into something special.

Who Makes Aztec Wilds?
Aztec Wilds comes from Iron Dog Studio, the slot brand of the 1X2 Network. The network also runs the 1X2gaming and AD LUNAM studios. You can read more about the group in our profile of 1X2gaming and its studios.
The 1X2 Network holds a supplier licence from the Malta Gaming Authority. Aztec Wilds is also certified for the UK market. In other words, you’ll find it at properly licensed casinos rather than only at offshore sites.
Theme and Design
Aztec Wilds has a bright, cartoon-style look. You stand on the steps of an ancient temple, surrounded by thick jungle. The reels are made from heavy stone tiles, each carved with a different symbol.
The symbols include colourful Aztec masks and statues, plus golden artefacts and medallions. When you land a win, the stones crumble into dust. Then, as more wins stack up, cracks appear in the temple walls. A golden light shines through, and tribal drums start to play. It’s a clever way to show you’re getting closer to the bonus.
The game plays smoothly on phones and tablets as well as desktop computers. There’s nothing to download.
Betting Range and RTP
Bets start at 0.50 and go up to 40 per spin. That’s a fairly narrow range, so high rollers may find the top stake a little low.
Aztec Wilds has an RTP of 96%. That’s right in line with the average for modern slots. Iron Dog rates the game as high volatility. In practice, this means wins can be less frequent, but the bigger ones can be well worth the wait. So it’s worth setting a budget that lets you ride out the quieter spells.
Our original review listed 1,024 ways to win, which matches a 4-row, 5-reel layout. It also quoted a top win of 6,000x your bet. Iron Dog doesn’t publish a maximum win for this game, so treat that figure as a guide only.
Aztec Wilds Symbols
The golden Aztec mask is the most important symbol on the reels, since it acts as the wild. The other high-value symbols are golden artefacts and colourful totem masks. Lower wins come from the familiar playing card suits.
Here are the payouts for five matching symbols, as recorded in our original review. Payouts can vary between casinos, so always check the paytable in the game before you play.
| Symbol | Pays for five |
|---|---|
| Pointed square gold symbol | 8x |
| Golden eye | 5x |
| Golden skull | 3x |
| Blue totem mask | 2.4x |
| Red totem mask | 1.6x |
| Green totem mask | 1x |
| Card suits | 0.2x to 0.6x |
There’s no scatter symbol in Aztec Wilds. Instead, the free spins are triggered by tumbling wins, which we explain below.
Aztec Wilds Features
Tumbling Reels
Every winning spin in Aztec Wilds starts a tumble. The winning stones crumble away, and new symbols drop down to fill the gaps. If those new symbols form another win, the process repeats. Tumbles keep going until no new wins appear.
This means one spin can pay out several times. More importantly, each tumble moves you closer to the free spins.
The Three Aztec Wilds
The game is named after its wilds, and there are three kinds to look out for in the base game:
- Standard wilds can land on almost any reel. They stand in for other symbols to help complete wins.
- Sticky wilds only land on the centre reel. They stay in place as the other stones tumble around them, so they can help with several wins in a row.
- Expanding wilds drop down from the top of any reel and cover its full height. A couple of these can change a spin in an instant.
Different types of wild can also land on the same spin. When that happens, the tumbles can really start to build.
Keep an eye on the centre reel. A sticky wild there stays put while the tumbles roll on, which makes a long chain of wins much more likely.
Free Spins Inside the Temple
This is where Aztec Wilds gets exciting. A single win cracks the temple walls. More wins in the same spin widen those cracks. Once you land four tumbles in a row, the walls open and you enter the temple for free spins.
Four tumbles in a row award 14 free spins. Each extra tumble gives you more time inside the temple, up to a maximum of 20 free spins. Extra tumbles also add a multiplier to your free spins wins, up to 6x.
In short, the longer your chain of tumbles in the base game, the better your bonus round will be. A big chain could set you up with 20 spins and a 6x multiplier on every tumble.
Aztec Wilds Megaways
Iron Dog has since released a follow-up, Aztec Wilds Megaways. It moves the action onto six reels with up to 117,649 ways to win. The sequel keeps the tumbling reels and wilds, but adds multipliers to the wilds during free spins.
The Megaways version also offers a much bigger top prize. Iron Dog lists its maximum multiplier as 12,000x. However, its RTP varies by casino, from 88% up to 95%. So check the game’s info screen before you play it.
