Age of the Gods: Ruler of the Dead Slot Review by Playtech
Ruler of the Dead is a dark entry in the Age of the Gods series from Playtech. The story follows Charon, the boatman of Hades. He carries new souls across the river Styx.
The game has five reels, three rows and 20 paylines. Stacked wilds with multipliers, a coin collection bonus and four jackpots drive the action.
This review covers the bet range, the wilds and the bonus game. We could not open Playtech’s own game sheet. Most figures therefore come from our earlier review and are marked that way.

Theme, Graphics and Sound
The reels sit beside a gloomy river in the underworld. Charon rows his boat through mist, and Cerberus guards the gates. The mood is eerie rather than scary.
The animation is smooth and the sound is haunting. A low, slow soundtrack builds a sense of doom. It is a clear change from the bright style of earlier series games.
Dark myth themes appeal to many players. Our guide to popular slot themes online lists other popular styles.
Betting Range
Our earlier review listed bets from $0.10 to $500 per spin. That range suits cautious players and big spenders. Choose a stake that fits your budget.
Keep your bet steady. The coin bonus can take time to appear.
RTP and Volatility
Our earlier review gave the RTP as 96.53%. That is a little above the common 96% mark. Our guide to RTP and online slots explains the figure.
The review rated the slot medium to high volatility. Wins may come unevenly. Quiet stretches can be followed by sudden bursts.
Symbols and Paytable
The paytable mixes underworld symbols with classic card values. Cerberus and Charon are the stars. The other symbols fill the mid and low tiers.
| Symbol | Role |
|---|---|
| Cerberus | Stacked Wild with a random multiplier up to 5x |
| Charon | Wild on reels 2, 3 and 4, triggers the coin bonus |
| Underworld icons | Mid to high paying symbols |
| Card values | Low paying symbols |
We did not verify exact symbol values. Open the in-game paytable to see them at your stake.
Cerberus Wild
Cerberus is the three-headed guard dog of Hades. He lands as a stacked wild. Whenever he forms part of a win, a random multiplier of up to 5x applies.
This is the main source of base game excitement. A stack of Cerberus on a busy line can lift a small win into a big one.
Charon Wild
Charon lands fully stacked on reels 2, 3 and 4. His arrival triggers the Coin Collection Bonus Game. He also works as a wild.
According to our earlier review, landing another wild with Cerberus lifts the multiplier from 1x to 3x. Landing two more wilds can bring the 5x multiplier.
Coin Collection Bonus Game
One fully visible Charon is enough to start the bonus. Gold, silver and copper coins land on the first two and last two reels. The third reel is covered by a stacked wild.
To collect a coin prize, the same coin type must sit on both sides of the grid. Multipliers then apply to those coin wins.
| Coin | Multiplier (earlier review) |
|---|---|
| Gold | 0.8x |
| Silver | 0.4x |
| Bronze | 0.2x |
The structure is easy to follow. You watch for matching coins and let the wild do the work in the middle.
Progressive Jackpots
The Age of the Gods jackpot feature triggers at random. You enter a pick screen with 20 coins. Match three of a kind to win a jackpot.
| Jackpot | Starting value (earlier review) |
|---|---|
| Power | $50 |
| Extra Power | $500 |
| Super Power | $5,000 |
| Ultimate Power | $100,000 |
Jackpot values grow as players bet. Check the game screen for today’s amounts.
Strategy and Bankroll Tips
- Choose a stake that gives you at least 150 spins.
- Watch for stacked Cerberus, since he lifts wins.
- Set a loss limit before you start.
- Never raise stakes to chase a jackpot.
- Take regular breaks.
No tip changes the odds. Every spin is random, and earlier results never affect the next one.
Mobile and Demo Play
Playtech builds most of its slots for phones and tablets. Check your casino’s game list to confirm. Some countries cannot play jackpot slots, so check your local rules.
A demo is a good way to see the coin bonus. Our guide to free online slots explains how to practise.
How a Typical Session Plays
The base game is steady. Cerberus drops in often enough to keep things lively. Wins are mostly small to medium.
When Charon appears, the tone shifts. The coin bonus starts, and you watch the coins land. It is a short, focused round.
The jackpot adds a background thrill. It can strike on any spin, though the chance is small.
Ruler of the Dead Compared with Other Age of the Gods Slots
| Area | Ruler of the Dead | Other series slots |
|---|---|---|
| Win system | 20 paylines | Often 20 paylines |

| Wilds | Stacked multiplier wilds | Varies |
| Jackpots | 4 progressives | 4 progressives |

Why the Wild Structure Matters
Most of the game’s value comes from its two wilds. Cerberus raises line wins, and Charon opens the bonus. They also work together.
When both land on the same spin, the multiplier climbs. That is the combination to hope for. It can turn a quiet spin into a strong one.
Because the wilds are stacked, they cover several positions. That raises the chance of completing a payline.
It is worth watching the middle reels. The third reel is covered by a stacked wild during the bonus. In the base game, reels 2, 3 and 4 do most of the work.
Getting Started with Ruler of the Dead
A short demo session is the best start. Spin for a few minutes and watch how often Cerberus lands. Note when Charon appears and how the coin bonus plays out.
Next, read the paytable. It shows the multiplier rules and the coin values at your stake. Knowing them helps you read each spin.
After that, move to real money at a small bet. Keep your limit clear. The coin bonus will come in time, so do not raise your stake to speed it up.
Playing Responsibly
Progressive jackpots can tempt you to bet more. Set a budget before you play and keep to it. Use deposit limits and reality checks if your casino offers them.
Never chase losses. Stop if gambling stops being fun.
